WARRIOR IN WHITE |
The Nimitz Silver Dolphins Chapter of submarine veterans has done a reprint of this 1970 book to honor the wartime services of Lucy Jopling. In World War II, Lucy was an Army nurse at Bataan and was evacuated from Corregidor by submarine at the last minute. She went back to the South Pacific as a Flight Nurse in January 1944 and helped fly out prisoners of war until February 1945. She married an ex-POW who never fully recovered his health from his imprisonment by the Japanese after the Bataan Death March, but Lucy and Dan raised four children, and Lucy made a new career as a social activist, championing the causes of her special charges: POWs, disabled veterans, widows, and women in general. Her story is an inspiring account of a remarkable woman. For many of us it may be somewhat nostalgic; for younger readers it should provide a role model for the virtues which made America great. ____________________________________________________________________________ |

CAMP WALDEMAR: |
In 1928, Ora Johnson, Principal of San Antonio's Brackenridge High School, founded a summer camp for girls at Hunt in the Texas Hill Country. She wanted to offer girls "such unusual advantages for physical, mental, and moral growth that the camp would draw from every part of the great Southwest." With a wide program of sports (especially horseback riding), there were also courses in the arts, including music and drama. The camp was soon a success and today is into a third-generation tradition for teenage girls. In 1934, Ora's niece, Doris Johnson, took the helm and continued the high principles and exciting activities which have made Waldemar an exemplar of what a summer camp should be. In 1980, Anne Vogelsang Armitstead, whose own daughters had enjoyed summers at Waldemar, sat with Doris Johnson for two interviews which tell the history of the camp and the people who have been associated with it through the years. This book, written as a project of Baylor University's Institute of Oral History, is the story in Doris' own words, providing a unique perspective on the wonders of Camp Waldemar. 6 x 9, paper, x, 94 pages ____________________________________________________________________________ |

For too long, women have allowed minor differences to cause major divisions among them. They have let "those in power" use subtle and not so subtle means to keep women apart. Not Any More! The 4th United Nation's World Conference on Women showed Ginger Purdy that it was time to go public with her "Middle Woman" philosophy. This late-blooming leader is on a crusade to unite "Middle Women" everywhere. - Foreword by Ann Richards. $15.95 plus tax email: gingerpurdy@sbcglobal.net ____________________________________________________________________________

SINGLENESS by Nadene Peterson and Barbara N. Sofie |
People just out of a marriage, never married, or recently widowed often search for an understanding of their aloneness. It is estimated that by the year 2000, singles will comprise fully 45% of the population, and today 3 out of 4 women will live out their lives as widows. Peterson, a counseling psychologist, and Sofie, a media relations manager, have written a guidebook to help them manage their singleness positively. DEANIE’S STORY |
In 1926, a little girl was born on a cotton farm in Central Texas. Her family called her “Deanie” and watched her grow into a bright little girl with a magical touch for all the animals of the farm and the woods. Today, Deanie is a grandmother, and she loves to tell stories of her childhood to her two small grandsons. Now she has put her tales into print so other children can enjoy them as Will and Zach do. Here is a picture of what life was like in the country during the hard days of the Depression; but Deanie had no sense of being poor. Her life was full of adventure and enjoyment as she played with her dog, Scobo, built a dollhouse, played jacks, won a declamation contest in the first grade, and was baptized in the river. Wonderfully illustrated with watercolors and drawings by Paul Hudgins, the book will take other grandmothers back to their childhood as well as entertaining young people who haven’t known where eggs come from, cows get milked, or how to make ice cream in a hand-turned freezer. 5 ½ x 8 ½, paper, viii, 72 pp 2100 Trinity BSwenson001@hot.rr.com ph (254) 772-3984 ____________________________________________________________________________

FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY SUPPLEMENT The History of American Security Life Insurance Company by Alice Evett |

Two stories of a historic Texas insurance company
In 1931, the country was still in the throes of the Great Depression, and one of the direst problems for people with low incomes was coping with health problems which could wipe out in a day what little financial security they had managed to achieve. A young man of foresight studied the situation and developed a program to help cope with the dilemma. What S. E. McCreless of San Antonio came up with was a service for prepaying hospital costs, and making it available at charges as low as pennies a week. From this small beginning, McCreless grew a company which produced full-fledged hospitalization insurance, life and accident insurance, with branch offices all over Texas and eleven other states, and a reputation not only as a pioneer in the industry but as a leader of integrity and substance. These two volumes, published in 1980 and 1985, celebrate the history of the company, its founders and employees. Author Alice Evett (now Geron) was editor of publications there from 1961 until 1973, and returned to the company later to write its definitive histories, and publish the books.

CAPPY, THE CHRISTMAS WOODPECKER by Ivan W. Fitzwater Illustrations by Paul Hudgins |
A wonderful story for children – to listen to or to read for themselves. Cappy, cold, hungry, and homeless on a winter day, is rescued by Santa Claus and taken home to be fed and warmed. When the grateful Cappy tries to help the elves make toys, everything he touches turns into disaster, and he is banished from the workshop. But when Santa faces a crisis on Christmas Eve, it is Cappy who saves the day, and now the little woodpecker rides on Santa’s sleigh every Christmas and helps deliver the toys. This tale by master storyteller Ivan Fitzwater was written for his own children some years ago. You will want to make it part of your own children’s Christmas story tradition. The beautiful illustrations by Paul Hudgins bring Cappy to vibrant life. 8 x 7, paper, 32 pp, saddlestitched. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

PARENTING YEAR BY YEAR |
This book is based on a lecture Dr. Fitzwater developed to help parents improve their parenting skills. It consists of a year-by-year blueprint of child growth, guiding parents through each stage with descriptions of what to expect. This "stair-step" method is a practical format which helps the parents meet the needs of a child at that particular age. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

FAILPROOF CHILDREN |
Failure is an unnatural condition in children: unless adults let them down, it will not occur. High motivation and proper task assignments by parents and teachers can literally prevent failure. This book describes how these can be accomplished, thus ensuring success for any child. The concept can also be used to reclaim those children who are now failing. 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 paper, xiv, 194, illustrations ___________________________________________________________________________ |

LOVING PARENTS / HAPPY KIDS |
"All behavior must build the individual. All behavior must build the family. All behavior must be more than fair to everyone." With these three goals, Fitzwater describes a way of creating a family team dedicated to control by self-discipline. "Successful family relationships don't just happen," he writes. "They result from commitment to principles embraced by the family members." 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 paper, x, 118 pages _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

YOU CAN BE A POWERFUL LEADER |
From a lifetime of experience, Dr. Fitzwater has distilled the secrets of powerful leadership, and he has conducted leadership seminars internationally for businesses and other groups. Leadership training depends a great deal upon instinct and notions, he says. His success in this training is long since proven, and here he provides details of his logic and methods, and offers a blueprint for a self-conducted "mini-seminar" on leadership skills development. First published in 1978, this edition updates the still valid tenets. 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 paper, x, 174 pages, illustrations _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

TIME UNDER CONTROL |
Dr. Fitzwater has given his "Time Management Seminar" from coast to coast, to businesses and other groups; this book reduces the seminar to written form "in as faithful a manner as possible." Believing that time management really means self-management, he emphasizes planning and goal-setting, gives rules for overcoming delays and handling interruptions. He describes how to run an effective meeting and when not to call one; how to delegate authority, motivate, handle a disorganized boss, and avoid workaholism and stress. Time management does not mean hurrying or working harder, he says. 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 paper, xiv, 178 pages _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here are 18 stories of inspiration, pathos, and humor, and 27 poems which the author has used so effectively from the lecture platform that his audiences asked him to print them for the public. With charming drawings by Paul Hudgins. 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 paper, viii, 152 pages, illustrations |
